This course explores world history through the subject of food. Over 14 weeks of classes we will investigate 10-14 different foods that teach us about how people, governments, and environments have shaped world history. This the course does seek to give precise answers, but instead to give a broad description of world history by looking at topics which we can all enjoy: food, ingredients, and meals. The foods: bread, beer, rice, soy beans, sugar, chili peppers, chocolate, corn, banana, chicken, hamburger, pizza, coffee, and the smoothie. Each class will feature a short lecture (20-30 minutes) followed by group discussion, etc. for the remainder of the class time.
