This course will examine the fundamental characteristics of globalization - and how globalization has worked to generate and spread mass Western culture around the world. The 14 lecture weeks will divide into two sections. Firstly, we will study the key concepts, definitions and debates surrounding the process of globalization and the spread of mass Western culture. In particular we will examine colonialism, Americanozation and nationalism. Secondly, we will study the "flows" of culture, technology, people and the environment, around the planet - as well as the problems these flows cause. Globailzation and mass Western culture are problematic and many cultures resist such effects.. Class readings will consist of one textbook and readings assigned by the professor, during the final three lectures (to be announced).
